On-Page Optimization

A close-up image of a cobbler's hands carefully applying polish to the sole of a leather shoe. Overlaid text reads, "What is the function of SEO? Driving Organic Traffic to Your Website. On-Page Optimization," conveying the analogy of SEO as a careful, detail-oriented process similar to crafting or repairing shoes.

Like so many SEO professionals, I have ignored my own site. I feel, though, that I should walk the walk. Forget the cobbler’s shoes; let’s see what the application of simple SEO principles, like on-page optimization, can do to the traffic to your site.

Assessing Content

If you’re like me, you have a lot I write about, and so I’ve been going through old blog posts, trying to optimize them for how search engines understand content. As a content writer, you’re serving two masters: 1) your customer who wants interesting, helpful content, and 2) search engines that need specific cues to assess your site properly. Certainly, GPT engines are changing everything, but they still get their information from search engine lookups. In a few years, this may change, but for now, keep on optimizing.

Run an analysis

A screenshot of the Ubersuggest dashboard displaying an SEO audit report for the website "jacquiburke.com." The report highlights an SEO issue: "No meta description" on 64 pages. The screenshot shows a list of URLs where the issue was resolved and where it remains unresolved, with the resolved issues marked with a green check and unresolved ones with a yellow exclamation mark. The left sidebar menu includes options like "Site Audit," "Keyword Research," "Traffic Estimation," and more.

My first task? Analyze my site to identify my problems. I used Ubersuggest as an SEO analysis tool. It’s user-friendly, easy, and very affordable.

As you can see, we have quite a few problems. From this simple run, I have decided to go through and write up all the meta-descriptions.

What is on-page optimization?

On-page optimization is the practice of enhancing individual web pages to improve their search engine rankings and attract more relevant traffic. It involves optimizing various elements on a page, such as title tags, meta descriptions, headers, content, images, and internal links. Effective on-page optimization ensures that a website is well-structured, keyword-optimized, and user-friendly.

Is on-page optimization require a full rewrite?

On page optimization can be a simple process of rewriting just a few sentences to ensuring that your primary keywords are being used and ensuring that your meta description and alt texts are filled out. Use your plugin to help you do as much (or as little) as you need to do.

What is a meta-description?

A meta-description is a brief summary, typically 150-160 characters, that appears under the title of a webpage in search engine results. It provides a concise overview of the page’s content, helping users decide whether to click on the link. Meta-descriptions may or may not affect search engine rankings but a solid meta-description encourages click through rates. It’s a basic tool for on-page optimization. Ensure that you include the primary keyword for your page in your meta-description.

What is a primary keyword?

A primary keyword is the main term or phrase that best represents the content’s focus, helping search engines understand and rank the page. For this blog, the primary keyword is “on0page optimization”.

The meta description field currently contains placeholder text, "Add your meta-description here." The interface also includes a preview of how the page will appear in search engine results, including the page title, URL slug, and a thumbnail image. How do I enter a meta-description?

In WordPress, your easiest method for ensuring your meta-description is updated is using an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO – which is the plugin I use.

Instal and activatte the plugin, then go to the post  where you want to add the meta description. Scroll down to the plugin’s meta box, usually located beneath the content editor. You’ll find a field labeled “Meta Description” or similar, where you can enter your custom meta description, then save or update the page.

What do I write for a meta-description?

GPT tools like Chat-GPT can be very helpful when writing meta descriptions and alt texts. Simply drop the first few paragraphs of your blog into the GPT and ask for a meta-description of between 150 and 160 characters. Read the answer carefully and make sure your primary keyword is included.

Does it work?

Yes, it does. Over the following weeks, I will be publishing traffic graphs that will show the growth and, just like me, if you take the time to be as careful and meticulous about fixing your SEO as a cobbler fixes shoes, you can put on these SEO shoes and get your business truly moving.
